DefCon Shuts Down

This morning I just recieved the unfortunate news that one of my favorite organizations, The Campaign to Defend the Constitution, is shutting down due to a lack of funding.

DefCon provided an essential service, raising public awareness of the Religious Right's efforts to subvert the Constitution. It was especially important when the Republican Party was at the height of its power before the 2006 elections.

Even though we've found a bit of relief from those frightening days, the Religious Right is certainly not going away. The pendulum will eventually swing the other way again, and we will need organizations like DefCon to do what they did.

Luckily, there are still a number of organizations keeping up the good fight including Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (Americans United, for short) and the Secular Coalition for America. There are others out there, but those are the major ones fighting for our essential freedom of and from religion.

  1. J-Bar,

    Thanks for the write-up.
We went through some great campaigns over at DefCon, and it was the first chance for many people to find a venue that allowed them to meet the religious right head on.
A lot was learned by many of us over the last while.
I'll give you a heads up though.
Lately there has been a hapless, unethical, ignorant, fundamentalist troll hanging around at DefCon. He spends countless hours spewing fractured logic and being disruptive. He posts hundreds of bible verses with no explanation.
He operates on the intelligence level of possibly a seventh grader and rarely has any real opinion of his own but rather posts ad nauseum quotes from AIG and Ken Ham.
Ironically, he has chosen the screen name Bill_from_DefCon and I now see he is trolling around the blogosphere using that name and posing as a DefCon spokesman of sorts.
He is not "from" DefCon. He is a lying unethical Right wing fundamentalist who shows no compunction whatsoever about using any means possible to distort, disrupt, quote mine, twist peoples words, and otherwise make a total ass out of himself. His fractured logic is absolutely hysterical!

If you see him around, you'll know what to expect!

The last time we talked, you were on what I considered a very exciting educational experience and I hope all is working well for you.

    Take care, and thanks,

    Dale

  2. Thanks Dale. As far as trolls go...whatever. Sometimes they enliven the discussion. But once they fall into complete nonsense it's easy enough to ignore them.

Anyway, I look forward to continuing the discussion now that I have a more regular schedule once again.
